Skin Irritation
Lisa, what's this dog's diet? Are the antibiotics helping at all? I have seen cases where nothing was found on scrapings and was diagnosed as "possible demodex", with the consequent ivermectin treatment - which only helps for a while until it comes back. To me this cases, same as when demodex is found, are just a weak immune system. It could also be some type of allergy, does it itch? In any event, I believe the antibiotics and antifungal shampoo are only going to further weaken the defenses. JMO Dolores
Lisa,
This could be puppy pimples around the mouth, as he is only about 9mths or so???
The back is a little different the hair loss is not usual. Has he changed his food? Could be an allergy to something in his food.
Contact allergy usually occur under the belly and up the legs. May even be airborn, any new pollens out in bloom at themoment.
Lisa, We have had some of the same problems with Duser (6 month male). He has the pimples around the mouth, on his hind quarters, and gets large ones on his back. The ones around his mouth stay consistent, but the ones on his back vary in size (quarter size at the largest) and duration. We tried all of the normal things (the vet recommended) like antibiotics, medicated baths, etc. and nothing seemed effective. We started to use Apple Cider Vinegar and Selsum Blue shampoo and the problems started to go away. We also changed his food from Innova to California Natural, laudry detergent to Cheer Free. He is 95% better. We are taking him to a specialists at the University of Tennessee Vet School on Thursday (Just to be safe). I don't mind asking some specific questions for you (just let me know). It looks like he is just growing out of this skin thing to me.

has this dog had a thyroid test run? Ruth Nichols
Ruth, why would you run a thyroid test? Because of the hair loss?
Beth & Cholla
it's a problem in the breed that can manifest itself in a variety of ways. skin problems, chronic infections, hair loss, thinning coat, etc. i'm one of those "better safe than sorry" types... Ruth Nichols
Dan, How do you use the Apple Cider Vinegar? Pour on and rinse off? Glad to hear that Duser is doing better! Thanks, Anne
Anne, We first open the welts (if they look like they need to be opened) and then apply the vinegar using a paper towel (one that does not have any kind of print on it). I think it burns a little, but Duser does not seem to care much. (If it really bothered him, we would definitely know!)
Also, the shampoo we used seemed to dry his coat, so we have used an oatmeal shampoo the last two times we bathed him. (I have to say that I am not happy with the way his coat looks after the oatmeal bath though.)
Does anyone have recommendations for a shampoo for a guy that gets frequent baths? We typically give Duser one bath a week. He loves getting dirty, and can reck the house if we do not clean him at least once a week.
One last question, Duser likes to watch himself go to the bathroom (both #1 and #2). He usually hits his front foot because he has turned to "see the pee". Anyone else experienced this?

Just a thought, but some of your skin problems might be due to the fact you bathe him so often..no matter what shampoo your using, that much bathing is really going to strip his coat of natural oils that it needs. My dogs are all indoor dogs and are lucky if they get a bath once a month. I have trained them to stop at the door when coming in, we wipe dirty feet before they proceed further. But then..I am not a super clean housekeeper either, I expect to see hair on the furniture and pawprints on the floors (and windows!) :)

For shampoo you might want to try Desert Sudz, availabe at http://ryanspet.com", I've used it and it seems to be real gentle, they have about 20 different varieties. I've also been giving Sophie Maxiderm for her coat, available at http://www.dogwise.com, it works wonders, makes her coat just shine! Sorry to sound like an ad, but both of these companies are great to deal with and have excellent products. Glad to hear Duser is getting better. Sophie started the twirlin' pooper routine a month or so back, when it got cold enough for steam to rise off of her fresh piles. I have to holler at her to not step in it!! These dogs get fascinated by the strangest things!! Brian and Sophie
Dan, Try Murphy Oil Soap if you have to bath Duser that frequently. It is a vegetable oil soap. It is found in the cleaning supply dept. of most grocery stores. Don't get the spray cleaner, just get the liquid soap that is thick like a shampoo. Joanne & Niles & Risa
Traci doesn't bathe Thea too often either. Sounds gross, but she really isn't a "smelly" dog, not like some with the long hair, etc. We have to work at keeping her coat nice (boy that Maxiderm stuff is great), so the vet said not to bathe a lot. Thea isn't fond of her bath.......Carole
