The gun metal charcoal blue color of the Blue Weimaraner is distinctive and beautiful, but it is a disqualifying fault in the American standard. The first recognized Blue Weimaraner was Casar von Gaiburg (Tell), an import to the U.S. from Germany.  Though some argue that Tell was a cross-bred dog, others believe that the blue coat was always around but confused with the mouse grey color.  Still others believe that Tell's coat color was caused by a genetic mutation.  Whatever the origin, the Blue Weimaraner is an AKC recognized pure-bred Weimaraner.  Tell is behind some of the most well-known kennel names in the U.S. on which many others are based.  Go back far enough, and you'll find that many grey dogs will show blue in its pedigree.

The Blue Weimaraner and the Longhaired   Weimaraner are both disqualifying faults in the American Standard.
