Dustin

One adventure has ended, another is about to begin!

10/17/2006

Dustin has recovered from the mange, has gained weight and is one happy boy!  It has been quite the adventure, hard to believe it has only been a little over two months since he came to us. But, look at him now!  WRNT is now accepting applications to adopt Dustin.  His new adventure is about to begin!  If you are interested in adopting Dustin and live in Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, Louisiana or Oklahoma, please click on the adoption page and submit an application.  Dustin is being fostered in the Houston area.

Dustin is a calm, loving boy.  He is approximately 10 months old.  He has not been cat tested, but appears to have very little prey drive.  A passing squirrel on the fence did not get more than a glance from Dustin.  He loves to play with other dogs.  He is a little timid at loud noises and new people, but his curiosity always gets the best of him and he warms up pretty quickly.  At home, he is outgoing, sweet and is very generous with the kisses!  He is not destructive when left out, but could easily be re-introduced to the crate.  At the present time, he sleeps on a dog bed beside our bed.  He quickly learned our routines and appears to be very happy!

I apologize for the late update.  Dustin and the rest of us just moved to a new house, it has been a fast and furious month!  Dustin took it all in stride as did Stoli and Queso.  Thanks again to all who helped with Dustin with donations, ebay purchases and prayers.  It helped us all get through the hard times.  Dustin's story is not ending, it is about to begin!  He will soon be going to a new forever home picked especially for him.  He will know love and a furever home that will treat him the way all creatures deserve to be treated!  Dustin will take a piece of my heart with him, but he has also given me a huge piece of his heart in return!

In the next week or so, I will put together a summary of Dustin's adventure and story as we know it.  I will tidy up the website and hope to do a slide show documenting his progress and the love that was sent to him from around the world.  So many of you wrote that you wished you could do more.  Trust me, the donations large and small are what allow WRNT to help a dog like Dustin.  We have 36 other wonderful weims available for adoption at this time. While they might not have had quite the adventure that Dustin did, they are still very much in need of their own family to love.  Your continued support is what helps us help them!  Thanks again for your love, donations and patience.  It is much appreciated.

Mary Kay, Eric, Lauren, Stoli, Queso and Dustin!

8/4/2006 -Dustin was rescued from a home where he was being neglected.  He was taken to a no-kill shelter and a volunteer at the shelter got on the internet and started spreading the word that this baby needed help and fast!  We agreed to take Dustin into our organization, and with the help of several wonderful people, Dustin has made it to Houston.

This is Dustin right after he was picked up about the first of August.  He is approximately 8  months old and is extremely emaciated. His weight should be in the 50 lb range, at this point, he only weighs 28 lbs.

Today  I met Dustin for the first time, I thought I was prepared.  I thought I knew what to expect, but when I saw him, tears came to my eyes.  How could anyone let a dog get to this point?  However, I was immediately greeted by smiling, beautiful weimy eyes as he wagged his tail to greet me.  It is hard to find a place to pet him, I am so afraid that my touch will hurt him.

My husband and I gave Dustin a bath with a special Benzoil Peroxide shampoo.  We had to leave the shampoo on for 15 to 20 minutes, so we walked him around the yard letting him sniff and explore, misting him from time to time to keep the shampoo from drying out.  After about 10 minutes, it seemed he felt some relief from the constant itching and burning of his skin.  He happily rolled in the grass, wagging his tail the whole time. It did my heart good to see him enjoying himself, but we have a long, hard road ahead.  I wanted to block the ugliness out of my mind, but you can not ignore the fact that this sweet young boy is nothing more than a walking skeleton.

So, with the help of many special angels, Dustin is here.  WRNT is committed to helping this boy get well and find a perfect forever home that will shower him with love for the rest of his life.

There is a lot of work to do to help Dustin, and we are certainly not out of the woods yet.  His immune system is stressed to its limits right now, any small setback could mean life or death for our dear Dustin.

We have a lot of people to thank for getting Dustin to this point, we will be updating this website as often as we can so that everyone can check on his progress.

WRNT is at our limit of dogs, the board took a special vote and made an exception to help Dustin.  If you can, please help us help Dustin and the 40 other weims in WRNT's care by making a donation.  All donations are tax deductible.
