Dustin

Dustin was rescued by an individual and taken to a no kill shelter near Baton Rouge, LA.  He was in horrible condition and wouldn't have lived much longer without help.  The shelter took him to a vet and started him on antibiotics and treatment for mange.  Despite their efforts, Dustin took a turn for the worse on 8/7/2006.  He started throwing up and having severe diahrrea.  He is a walking skeleton, the chance of dehydration and death were all too real.

8/8/2006 - We were working hard to find transport to get Dustin to Texas, but it was going to take a while.  A wonderful, loving volunteer at the shelter transported Dustin to her vet where he was boarded.  Dr. Whitlock and staff took excellent care of Dustin.  Going slowly, they put him on a special prescription diet to help soothe his stomach, then slowly reintroduced an antibiotic and the ivermec to treat the mange.  He held it all down.  However, he was still very depressed and did not respond to the staff when they tried to get his attention.

Dr. Whitlock cautioned that he could go either way at this point. Even under the supervision of the vet, Dustin was a very sick puppy.  All we could do is wait.  The decision was made to leave Dustin with Dr. Whitlock until Saturday so that his condition could stabilize.

8/10/2006

Dustin barked!  Not normally an event worth celebrating, but Dustin barked!  He wanted out of his run and he wanted attention!  This is good news.  Hang in there little buddy, you're going to get better every day.  He's decided he wants to live! Now we have to get him to Texas.

Ashley with Weimaraner Rescue of the South volunteered to drive from her home near New Orleans, up to the vet's office and then head towards Texas.  She definately earned her wings!  It is not easy to find someone to drive hundreds of miles with a dog as sick as this one.  Many would be afraid, but Ashley answered our call.

8/12/2006 - Ashley picked up our boy and headed towards Texas.  She was shocked at how bad he looked.  But Dustin was a trooper and rode very well.

Laurie W, a WRNT volunteer, left the Houston area to head to Louisiana to meet Ashley and Dustin.

Laurie brought Dustin to Mary Kay's house, WRNT volunteer, where he was greeted by the family and given a chance to stretch his legs.

Dustin then received a bath with a special Benzoil Peroxide shampoo to help bubble the dead and live mange mites out of his pores.  After about 10 minutes, Dustin seemed to feel better.  Maybe the shampoo helped ease the constant itching and burning.  Poor Dustin, how could anyone let you get this way?  No energy to spend getting angry, we have to stay positive and help Dustin.

After his bath, he was allowed a short romp in the back yard.  He was happy to explore at a slow trot, his tail wagging the whole time.  Stoli and Queso were introduced and took it all in stride.  Dustin seemed to enjoy having the other weims around.

He is so sick, so skinny and he only has one small spot on the top of his head and back of his neck that is not ravished by the mange.  He adores attention and comes to us for some pets and attention.  If you lean down, he gives the most gentle little kisses.  Meanwhile, his tail never stops wagging.

After a good meal, a romp in the backyard, he is curled up asleep on a large soft bed.  Sleep well sweet boy, we are all pulling for you!

We will continue to update Dustin's pages as he continues his struggle to survive.  He is not out of the woods yet, but we are cautiously optimistic that we have made progress in the last few days.  Please keep Dustin in your prayers.  We have had some nice items donated to help raise funds for Dustin's care.
