Dustin

8/13/2006

Dustin slept through the night in his crate.  This morning Stoli woke me up early to go out.  So, we woke Dustin up and went out.  I prepared breakfast for all three and Dustin ate fairly well.

Today his skin is a little red again, he also developed a slight cough and has gooky eyes. I hope this is not kennel cough or worse.  This boy can't handle it right now.  We'll hope the Cipro will help him deal with this.

Dustin enjoyed being outside in the backyard, but I was afraid to leave him out too long as I didn't want him to get a Texas sunburn!  Yikes, can you imagine?

He is nothing more than a walking skeleton. It still amazes me this boy is alive.

Today I got angry.  How could anyone have this boy and let him get so bad?  I have been suppressing my anger, telling myself it would do no good.  Focus on helping Dustin, that is what matters now.  But as this little tidbit of weimness comes over to give me a gentle kiss, tears roll down my face.  Why?  If they just didn't want him, why didn't they take him to the shelter, why didn't they give him away?  I went into the spare bedroom to clear out boxes of stuff I have been keeping for way too long.  I used my anger as a tool to get stuff done and gave Dustin some time in his crate to rest up. He wants to follow us everywhere, I caught him falling asleep standing up in the kitchen as I prepared our lunch.  Don't worry little guy, we'll keep feeding you.

These pictures still don't show you all how skinny he is.  I tried to get pictures that told the true story, but I guess it's true that the camera adds 10 pounds!

On the bright side, people from around the world are sending good wishes and donations to help with Dustin's care.  We have some wonderful stuff for auction on ebay.  Be sure to check them out.  We have everything from weimaraner history to a whimsical, fun weimaraner painting up for auction.  I have had a few more donations and still need to get some more auctions up.  Keep checking ebay.  A search for weimaraner rescue and weim rescue should pull up everything we have.  Heartland Weim Rescue has also listed quite a few auctions to help raise money for Dustin!  Thank you Heartland.  This is what rescue is about, we all help each other out.  After all, it is all about the dogs!

To all of you who have sent donations, words can not express our appreciation.  We don't know how much it will take to get Dustin better, but please know he will get the best care possible.  Dustin and the 40 other weims say thank you!  Without you, WRNT could not help any of them!

More tomorrow.  Dustin, Stoli and Queso and I need some rest!  It's been an eventful weekend.

8/17/2006 - Day 6

Sorry I haven't posted in a few days.  I have been busy with work and taking care of my daughter and Dustin.  Dustin is doing great, still critical and we have to watch him carefully, but he appears to be feeling better.  Yesterday he received several gifts to add to his growing collection.  On Monday, one of Lauren's friends brought Dustin some toys and a card with a donation for WRNT. Susan and Indy sent some Seacure and a nice little stuffed toy for Dustin.  He is going to be soooo spoiled!  But he deserves it! Yesterday we received a huge box of Seacure (www.propernutrition.com) from Dee at Proper Nutrition.  I have heard wonderful things about Seacure - it was originally developed to help people who were suffering from malnutrition.  Whole Dog Journal had a write up on Seacure and they were impressed.

I have heard of several dogs suffering from IBD who could not gain weight, never had a firm stool and the vet's couldn't fix the problem.  Seacure helped!  So, we are very grateful to Dee and Proper Nutrition for donating the Seacure for Dustin.  He got his first dose last night.

Dustin's attitude and strength seems better today.  He actually ran in the backyard.  Not the usual little trot he has been doing, he ran!  I remind myself constantly that I can not let my guard down.  Even though I am pleased with his progress, he is still a very fragile puppy.

I took pictures this evening, not the best, but hopefully you all can see the improvement.  The response to Dustin's plight has been amazing and he is proof that your prayers are working.  Please continue!

We have had lots of wonderful donations to WRNT of unique items to sell on ebay, so be sure to check it out.  Search for Weimaraner rescue and you will see some amazing things! We have received so many donations of items to auction, that Joy and I will be adding them through the weekend.

This weekend I hope to add a couple of pages honoring those who have made donations to WRNT in Dustin's name.  I will also add a page with more of the technical side of his treatment - dates, weight, pictures and meds and supplements he is receiving.  Hopefully this will help others.  Again, thank you all for your support.  We at WRNT appreciate it.

WRNT is an all volunteer organization and all donations received is spent on caring for the Weims.
