2003 Patriotic Quilt Winner

Duane and Noble (1981)

My husband Duane won the Weimaraner Rescue Quilt!!!  One of the best things about it, is all the nice congratulation wishes from everybody both publicly and privately. You guys are the best!

Somebody pinch me, because it really hasn't sunk in that the quilt is coming here to stay with us!!  We will take good of it, and we will make sure to show it to everyone to continue public education about rescue.

I am really proud of our small global group of quilters.  We communicate with each other via our email list [WeimQuilt2000] started by Amy Brotcke of Missouri in June, 2000.  For those of you unfamiliar with how the quilt is made, it starts with the theme for the quilt.  Eileen Ingala is terrific at brainstorming new ideas for the quilt:  2002-Alphabet Quilt, 2003-Patriotic Quilt, 2004 will be Hobbies, and 2005 will be Calendar/Seasons.

The next step is the quilters each making a unique square with their choice of fabric, design and technique (applique, cross-stitch, embroidery, etc.).  We have square contributors from all over the world;  Argentina, Spain, Germany, Canada, all over the US, and next year we will have one from Australia too.  The squares are mailed to Beth Krieger in California, aka the Quilt Ogre.  Many squares arrive after the deadline and somehow Beth magically turns them in to a beautiful quilt top.

The quilt top is then shipped to the person that arranged it to be professionally machine quilted.  I believe Laurie Sales in Wisconsin has taken care of that for the past two years.  Eileen's hair turned white when the original quilter she hired backed out at the last minute for our first quilt.  She found someone else and made the deadline.

Each year we have had a different person take on the task of taking ticket orders, filling out stubs, mailing tickets, keeping track of expenses.  This is a huge job that goes on all year long.  Sharon Manning from Kansas was the first, then Carol Barsema from Illinois, and this year it was Mary Kay Wolfshohl from Texas.  MK the superwoman added the PayPal option this year, and also helped Karen Sandvold manage the cookbook sales.

The quilt is then personally guarded by the quilt ladies while it is displayed at the National Specialty.  Sharon Manning called us immediately from Rhode Island after the banquet to let us know the good news.  I bought 12 tickets on the last possible day for mailing a check.  I made labels and put four in my name, four in my daughter's name, and four in Duane's name.

I've attached a photo (circa 1981) of Duane with his favorite Weim named Noble.

Thank you everyone for making the Weimaraner Rescue Quilt a success.
