Day in the Field
A special edition quilt
for Ardmore - November 2004
A
At the 2004 WCA Specialty in
Ontario, CA, the quilters were approached and asked why they had never
done a field themed quilt. Well, we're always up to a challenge,
but we had a problem, the 2005 Quilt was already in production!
The challenge was put out to the group and several of the members agreed
to contribute another block or two in a relatively short period of time!
The field quilt was born! This quilt depicts the weim doing what
it was bred to do. Each block is different, some comical, some
serious, but they each tell a story about our love for the natural
ability of our breed. This quilt was given away at Ardmore in
November of 2004. So, in 2004, this small group of dedicated
quilters put out two beautiful quilts!!
We pulled it off, but not without
some trouble!! A new quilter was used to do the quilting
(stitching the three sections - top, backing and batting) together.
When we got it back, it was beautiful, but lumpy!! The quilt did
not lay flat and had numerous puckered areas. Once the winner was
chosen, we gave her the choice of having it re-quilted on her own or
letting us keep it and have it redone. She said she would wait
until it was right!
Taking out all
the tiny stitches that were put in by the first quilter is no small
task. It took two kind Illinois volunteers, Carol B. and Joanne R.
hundreds of hours to remove the quilting. Once it was removed,we
sent it back to Sally, the best machine quilter in the world (or at
least we think so!). We sent along new backing and sashing fabric
in case she needed it. Sally took the top apart and put in new
sashing as the old one had too many little puncture wounds in it to
survive!
When we
received the quilt back from the second quilting, all of the quilters
who saw it were in awe! This is a simply amazing quilt and once
again, our Quilting Sally saved the day!!
The quilt winner did not
actually get possession of the quilt until late 2005.
